Walks across downlands and through ancient grazed pastures help Keith Rand to tune into the subtle details of plants and grasses, as well as the field shapes and boundary lines that inspire his work.
Back in his studio, working with native timbers, he carves away the bulk of the wood using traditional, bladed hand tools creating surfaces that are alive with marks. He arrives at slender tensile shapes, which are paired and interlocked. relationships develop between edges, surfaces and internal spaces. Patinas are created using natural pigments or solutions that react with tannins in the wood. The sculptures attain an inherent life of their own, evocative of plants, figures and the land.
